North Monthly Meeting

Thursday January 4, 2024

Our next meeting will be January 4th.  

We will meet at 6:00pm for Dinner and Drinks at The Bar at 5316 W 95th Street, Prairie Village, KS 66207. Come, socialize, and meet our next Sheriff, PV Police Chief Byron Roberson. 

Each person will order and pay for their own meal and drinks.

South Monthly Meeting

Johnson County Democratic Women North and South both have equal dues for those over 35 years old, identifying as men or as women. Only $40/year to support Democratic Candidates! Thank you to all who continue memberships. Please rejoin or join for the first time to have a reverberating impact on our community via JCDW’s campaign donations to our candidates in 2024. 
Update on Kansas Federation of Democratic Women
You are encouraged to join or rejoin one of our Johnson County Chapters by going to the KFDW website. The new entity for processing dues is ACT Blue. This is still the link within our fundraisers and other donations. KFDW voted to not use the software that they’ve administered for several years. Special thanks to our IT whizzes in JCDW South for getting us through this. You may go through the same sign-in process and choose JCDW North or South as your home chapter. and eventually, submit your dues payment to one of these entities via an Act Blue Link. We are still associated with State KFDW for other administrative chapter functions.
Any State or Federal candidates wishing to request KFDW possible funding need to join one of the local chapters by Dec. 31st, 2023 to be eligible for campaign contributions. Local and county candidates have several more months to join our chapters to be eligible for campaign donations from JCDW North or South.

There is an application but you MUST be a member of JCDW North/South or WYCO by December 31 to participate. This is at the State level and not the county level.

North Monthly Meeting

Thursday November 2, 2023

Our meeting will be November 2.  We gather at 6:00 and meeting starts at 6:30.  We meet in person at the Democratic Office with a  Zoom option.

Jerry Stogsdill will be our speaker.  Jerry represents Kansas State House District 21 since 2016.  He currently serves on the Taxation Committee, Federal and State Affairs Committee, and Education Policy Committee.

Jerry was an educator for many years, serving on numerous boards and committees, which include Board of Trustees of the University of Kansas Center for Research, and president of Kansas National Education Association.  He has experience in business and is the current owner of two small businesses. He served on a committee of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce.  He served as an officer in the US Navy for thirteen years, active and reserve.
Jerry will talk to us about the upcoming legislative session, and what we can expect.

Alliance for a Healthy Kansas

The Alliance for a Healthy Kansas’s primary policy goal is to ensure accessible and affordable health insurance to all Kansans, primarily through the expansion of our state’s Medicaid program, KanCare.  We represent a coalition of more than 130 organizations and community leaders who support the Alliance’s values and efforts to expand KanCare through involvement with Alliance meetings, activities and outreach efforts. 

Lacey Kennett is the Director of Communications for the Alliance for a Healthy Kansas, a nonprofit, non- partisan advocacy organization that works to ensure accessible and affordable health insurance for all Kansans, primarily through the expansion of the state’s Medicaid program, KanCare. Prior to her work at the Alliance, she spent more than ten years as an employee with the State of Kansas. Most recently she spent nearly three years at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment working in emergency preparedness and responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Before that she spent nine years at the Kansas Insurance Department doing public affairs, consumer assistance, and working as the executive assistant to the commissioner. She has a Master of Arts in Communication Studies from the University of Kansas and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Communication from Emporia State University. In her spare time, she is an avid seamstress, bagmaker, and reader.

Answers to Some Common Membership Questions 

Here are some clarifications to some common membership questions.

Why are there two Chapters (North and South) in Johnson County?

Because of the large geographical area in Johnson County, it is more convenient for those who reside nearer to the North or South groups to attend a meeting without driving as far. Generally, 435 is the dividing line between the two chapters although anyone can be a member of either group. All members may attend or participate via Zoom, when that format is available, for either or both meetings. Attending meetings is a great way to hear from candidates for county or local offices. The Chapters’ lecture speakers are excellent and informative as well.

 

Can members affiliated with North or South attend and vote in either or both groups?

Yes.

 

How does the Kansas Federation of Democratic Women fit into the Johnson County Democratic Women’s Chapters?

The state organization is an umbrella organization for the various county chapter organizations and assists with administrative coordination for the county’s chapters such as processing credit card dues and keeping track of county member status. The KFDW publishes an online newsletter quarterly and does various educational functions for all of the counties’ chapters. They also may endorse candidates running for state-level

offices.

 

Are all of the meetings available on Zoom?

No. Please check each month’s newsletter to see which are available by Zoom and which are in person only.

 

May I join or renew my membership by credit card or check?

Yes. Our state umbrella organization, Kansas Federation of Democratic Women, is the vehicle through which credit card dues are processed and directly deposited into the selected Chapter’s account for county or local candidate donations. The KFDW or the county chapter may send out a renewal request when dues are nearing the expiration date, just under one year from whenever the member joins. For new members, a chapter must be selected for donations/dues from that chapter to benefit candidates selected and endorsed by that specific county chapter.

 

How do I pay dues via credit card?

Click or copy and paste the following link: https://www.kfdw.org

On the KFDW home page, click “chapters” for a drop-down menu of chapters’ names.

Choose Johnson County North or Johnson County South, then click to select.

Member sign-up and renewal page pops up. If renewing, then click on renewal and follow the steps. Please make sure that your email address is current and correct.

If new member, then choose the type of membership:

Regular- for those identifying as female and over 35 years of age

Associate-for those identifying as male

Student or Young Democrat-for those 35 or younger or students of any

age.

At-large does not apply in most cases and dues may go to KFDW

instead of the selected county chapter.

 

If paying dues by check, to whom should new or renewing members make their checks payable?

Please make, either Johnson County Democratic Women North or South, the payee. Joyce Hughes (21707 W 62nd St, Shawnee, KS 66218) is the present Treasurer for the North group. She can receive and process membership payments for North. Carol Shimeall (17705 W 155th Ter., Olathe, KS 66062) is the treasurer for JCDW South.

 

What should I do if the state organization sends a billing request?

You may pay through the KFDW website with your credit card OR you can contact the treasurer of your chapter and pay dues to the Chapter. If the automated dues membership renewal notice is in error, please let the chapter treasurer or other officer know.

Kristan Chamberlain is the Executive Director of KC Can Compost. Her vision for an environmental and social venture began in 2016 when she met Joe Colaizzi, then Executive Director of Kansas City Rescue Mission. Together, they sought to create a viable enterprise that would provide a significant benefit to the Kansas City community, while at the same time create living-wage jobs for those transitioning out of homelessness. Kristan’s entrepreneurial vision, coupled with her experience in strategic planning, business management, and marketing provided the foundation necessary to develop and grow KC Can Compost – a socially and environmentally conscious business that is committed to the transformation of lives and our local environment.

KC Can Compost has 2 missions: to preserve our planet through the collection and composting of organic waste, and to educate and prepare men and women transitioning out of difficult circumstances, like incarceration and homelessness, for employment in the green economy.

Meet our new JCDW North Board Members!!

 

Dawn Olney, Interim-President

I have been a member of JCDW for around five years, serving as Programs Coordinator.  I enjoy learning new things and going into issues that affect real people every day. People think “Politics” is separate from real life, and that can’t be further from fact. I feel very strongly that women need health care and it is wrong to target a population of Americans, such as LGBTQ+ citizens, with discriminatory laws.  So it is important to elect Democrats to all levels of office. I started working elections in 2006, and have been a Precinct Captain in Prairie Village for 7 years.  I am President for the rest of 2023 so we can try to get all the positions filled and keep JCDW North running and donating.

 

Trisch Domingue, Secretary

About 10 years ago I was invited to a gathering of Democratic women, which encouraged my desire to be involved with my political party of belief and choice. Beverly Ring’s request that I help with an “orphan” precinct hooked me! Soon after I got involved with supporting Johnson County Dems.

While volunteering at the county office, Anne Pritchett shared information about Johnson County Democratic Women and the national organization, Federation of Democratic Women. I have been an active member in both North and South clubs, volunteering at community events and monthly membership meetings. Most recently, I have accepted the role as secretary of the JoCo Democratic Women-North. Membership has been as beneficial to me as I strive to be to the organization.

 

Palita Robinson, Fundraising

I have been a member of JCDW since 2013. I held the position of Membership Co-Chair for 3.5 years.  I now have the opportunity to be part of the fundraising committee.  Supporting getting Democrats elected is what it’s all about. I enjoy being part of an organization of like-minded people.

 

Sheryl Rice, Treasurer

I’ve been involved in Johnson County Democratic Women-North for the past few years. I’ve done everything I can do to help; from sitting in a Democrat booth at Old Settler’s Day to handing out candidate signs. 

Cassie Wiltanger-Woolworth made me aware that the North Chapter needed a Treasurer. I spoke to the interim-president, Anne Prichett, about the vacancy and offered my services. Before I was disabled, I was a bookkeeper, so I knew I could do the job. The rest, as they say, is history.

North and South JOINT Meeting

Thursday September 7, 2023

Please join JCDW for a joint North and South meeting on September 7.  Please note the different meeting place and information.

We will gather at 6:00.  We need to be out of the room with chairs stacked by 8:00, so to facilitate that,  the speaker will start at 6:15.   We will have business and candidates talk after the speaker.   It will be hybrid with a Zoomoption.
Our speaker is Professor Alesha Doan, a professor from the department of Sexuality Studies at the University of Kansas.  She will give us some insight into the laws and policies negatively affecting women today and the cultural misogyny behind them.

Alesha E. Doan is an Associate Professor at the University of Kansas and holds a joint appointment in the School of Public Affairs & Administration and the Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies Department. Professor Doan’s interdisciplinary research program is situated at the intersections between gender, public policy and organizations, with a substantive focus on reproductive politics, sexual violence, and gender & the military. Her research examines the ways in which gender is infused into the social and political structures that shape formal and informal practices. Professor Doan interrogates how these gendered practices create obstacles for people that limit their decisional autonomy, and create inequities in organizations, policies and the lived experiences of people. Her publications include articles in a variety of journals as well as four books: Abortion Regret: The New Attack on Reproductive Freedom (co-authored, Praeger 2019), Organizational Obliviousness: Entrenched Resistance to Gender Integration in the Military (co-authored, Cambridge University Press, 2019), Opposition and Intimidation: The Abortion Wars and Strategies of Political Harassment (University of Michigan Press 2007), and The Politics of Virginity: Abstinence in Sex Education (co-authored, Praeger 2008).

Old Settlers September 7-9th

We are ROCKIN A BOOTH this year at Old Settlers in downtown Olathe!

Join Johnson County Democratic Women and JoCO Democrats to ROCK THE BOOTH.  We need volunteers on Wednesday night for set up, and then Thursday through Saturday to staff the booth, answer questions, pass out signs, give lit, accept donations, etc. To help sign up HERE.

I have been a member of JoCo Dem Women off and on since its inception. I am very proud of this organization and have delighted in watching its size, structure and influence grow over the past 2+ decades. Supporting good candidates who will advocate for Democratic policies is a great way to improve many peoples’ lives now and in the future. 

I am excited to humbly join this effort as part of this excellent, persistent, experienced group.

We are sister organizations, working together to engage women in politics and help get Democrats in Johnson County elected.

North Monthly Meeting

Thursday August 3, 2023

This meeting is hybrid. Either join us at the JoCo Dems office or on Zoom.

Please join Johnson County Democratic Women North on August 3 at the Democratic Office at 8971 W 75th Street, Overland Park KS 66204.  We also have a Zoom option.  We gather at 6:00 to socialize and the meeting starts at 6:30.
Our speaker is Mary English, the Building Performance Project Manager of the non-profit Metropolitan Energy Center. Prior to joining MEC, Mary worked in the building performance industry conducting energy assessments, testing, and consultation in both the residential and commercial sectors. 

Mary founded Small Step Energy Solutions which became a leading home energy assessment provider. Small Step worked with municipalities – including Kansas City, MO – to review and update their building energy code. She also worked closely with area developers to create sustainable developments and multifamily housing based on equity goals. Mary then moved into commercial-business sustainability, helping start-up businesses in passive house design, energy benchmarking, and efficiency upgrades in HVAC systems. She currently serves on the Programs Committee for USGBC Central Plains and the Equity Committee for Climate Action KC. 

In off hours Mary enjoys the great outdoors with her husband and dog; practicing aerial arts; and watching Royals baseball. 

South Monthly Meeting

Teresa Woody with Kansas Appleseed will be joining us to talk about her work.

Teresa oversees litigation filed by Kansas Appleseed and our partners, evaluates potential areas of litigation, and works with local and national pro bono attorneys and organizations on identifying legal issues and/or litigation that could affect systemic change in Kansas.

Kansas Appleseed is a statewide 501(c)(3) nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy organization dedicated to the belief that Kansans, working together, can build a state full of thriving, inclusive, and just communities. We’re working for a future where:

  • All Kansans have the resources they need to support themselves and raise healthy families.
  • All Kansans can participate fully in the community under equal protection of the law.
  • All Kansans benefit from a fair and effective system of justice.

Kansas Appleseed works with community partners to understand the root causes of problems, support strong grassroots coalitions, and advocate for comprehensive solutions so all Kansans can reach their full potential. When necessary, Kansas Appleseed pursues impact litigation to protect Kansans’ rights and wellbeing.

CANDIDATE CONVERSATIONS – Thank you all for coming to JCDW South’s Thursday night Membership Meeting. It was a resounding success!

Flip It Blue

Thank you for another incredible event at Sar-Ko-Par Park. We had our amazing candidates joining this year. Lots of new people joined and but we also had many people returning for their third or fourth year! The event was great fun and it offered us all time to meet new people and take a quick break from canvassing.
We raised a little over $4,000 to add to our candidate donations this year. 💪 Special thanks to the elected officials who came and shared a laugh with us.
Also, special thanks to Chilakillers for their amazing menu – We had several compliments and plan on bringing them back for a repeat engagement.
Please plan on joining us next July for our next Flip it Blue event. Next year we’re going to have to do it harder, stronger and faster.  Get ready – It is a marathon, not a sprint.

North Monthly Meeting

Join JCDW North on July 6 when Dawn Buehler from Friends of The Kaw will join us to tell us about their work on the river.  We meet in person at the Johnson County Democratic office, 8971 W 75th Street, Overland Park, KS 66204.  We will have a Zoom option.

Dawn is Executive Director of Friends of the Kaw.  In addition to managing the daily activities of FOK, she monitors, responds and mediates suspected pollution incidents to the Kansas River; facilitates educational paddle trips; and manages their advocacy efforts to protect and preserve the Kansas River.

Growing up on a farm on the plains of Kansas, Dawn knew at young age how much she loved the land, water and nature.  Dawn was born and raised in the Kaw River Valley in DeSoto on a 2,000 acre crop farm. She spent her childhood riding alongside her father learning about the importance of taking care of the soil, water, and providing for the family. She also spent many hours on the beautiful Kansas River fishing, camping, canoeing and riding in her Dad’s airboat.  Her love for the river began at this early age when she would sit and watch the sunset on the river at the end of each farm day.

Dawn earned both a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources, Fish and Wildlife Conservation from Oregon State University; and a Bachelor in Business Administration from Baker University.  She has spent her career working as a conservationist, accountant and farmer, and her passion is watershed management and finding ways we can all work together to improve our watershed and the quality of the Kansas River.

Dawn is happiest when she is outdoors.  You can often find her fishing, hiking, kayaking, reading and exploring. She lives with her family, including two chocolate labrador retrievers, on their farm south of Eudora.

Dawn is the Chair of the Kansas Water Authority and the Governor’s Appointee for the Oil & Gas Advisory Committee.  She is also active on the Board of Directors for the Kansas Land Trust and the Board of Directors for Kansas Alliance for Wetlands and Streams.

June Meeting Recap

Grandparents Against Gun Violence joined JCDW North with Judy Sherry.  She is the Co-founder and President of Grandparents Against Gun Violence (founded in September 2013) and Chair of Heartland Coalition, a Program of Grandparents Against Gun Violence.  Their program, Locks for Love is nationally recognized and only asks owners to lock up their guns – a message that resonates with over 70% of the population.  We found out we are gaining in some locations and losing in others and excellent ways to discuss & engage the ‘opposite’ side about gun safety.

Tell them to join JCDW by June 30th so we can donate to their campaign!  Also note, if you want an endorsement from JCDW North or South you must, must, must fill out the endorsement form by the Primary.  If you choose not to fill out the form, we will assume you did not want our endorsement as you are in a race that is very non-partisan and the endorsement would be an issue in your campaign.  To all our Dems  – GOOD LUCK!

Judy Sherry is the Co-founder and President of Grandparents Against Gun Violence (founded in September 2013) and Chair of Heartland Coalition, a Program of Grandparents Against Gun Violence. She  was awarded the AARP Andrus Award for Community Service in September 2014 and the MainStream Coalition Stand Up Speak Out award in October 2017. In November 2018, Judy was named one of Shepherd’s Center 70 Over 70 award recipients. The award recognized 70 individuals from a variety of backgrounds who inspire others and improve our community. She was also honored by Charlies (Safety Demonstration) House in 2022 with its Excellence in Home Safety Award.

Her past community activities include Board member of the Girl Scouts, Mid-Continent Council; Board member and Vice President of the Kansas City Ad Club; Advertising Professional of the Year in 1998; past chair of True Blue Women; and served on Neighborhood and Tourist Development Fund for eight years. She volunteered at JFS Food Pantry and Youth Friends and served as appointee to  Mayor’s Citizen Task Force on Violence. 

Judy was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, and graduated from the University of Missouri, Columbia. She worked as an advertising and marketing professional and retired after 48+ years. She is a partner in both Montague-Sherry Advertising and Pepper Advertising, and is the president of Judy Sherry Consortium. 

Judy has been married for 62 years and has two grown children and four grandchildren –all live in Kansas City.

“Training to Jump Hurdles in American Politics:  Women’s Political Training Programs”

Research has focused on the central question of why women don’t run for political office for decades. While female political representation has been increasing, the question remains prevalent. This research focuses on surveys conducted at non-partisan political training programs for women interested in running for office or being appointed to boards and commissions. This research asks training participants what motivates them to run for office, as well as the barriers they perceive to exist in running for political offices.  Additionally, this research seeks to answer the question of how the political training programs have helped them navigate the perceived barriers

Dr. Terri Easley-Giraldo is a Professor of Communication Studies at Johnson County Community College and has taught at JCCC for 18 years. She is the former JCCC Debate Coach (2005-2011) and coached the 2010 & 2011 Community College National Debate Champions. She has a bachelor’s degree in Literary Studies from the University of Texas at Dallas, a master’s degree in Communication Studies from Baylor University, and a PhD in Communication Studies from the University of Kansas.  Dr. Easley-Giraldo teaches courses in public speaking, intercultural communication, leadership, debate, honors, and political campaigns.  Dr. Easley-Giraldo works with several international educational institutions in Costa Rica, the Netherlands, and Russia on collaborative virtual exchange projects.  Over the past seven years she has presented seventeen papers/projects at regional, national, and international conferences and has been awarded on top paper panels. Her research in political communication explores campaign strategies, social media, gender, and leadership. She has been recognized with numerous awards for publication, service, and teaching.

Jennifer Brown is a retired veterinarian and mother of two in Prairie Village, KS.  She has been lobbying Congress on the climate and a member of Citizens’ Climate Lobby since 2011, and has been leading the KCKS CCL group since 2017.  She will talk to us about Citizens’ Climate Lobby in general and specific bills they have helped pass in Congress, and bills they are working on.

Rep. Mari-Lynn Poskin will be giving us a recap of the legislative session. 
There are several bills that Governor Kelly has vetoed ranging across a number of controversial topics – from mail-in ballots and transgender issues to food assistance restrictions and flat tax fights – lawmakers just got through with the Veto Session and Mari-Lynn will be discussing/dissecting and explaining how you can help.

I’m grateful for KFDW and for CD3 electing me, Director.  I could not be prouder of what we accomplished last year.  Yes, some losses, but even then, we moved the needle.  I’m looking forward to carrying the torch to ignite a majority Democratic Senate and House with inclusivity and diversity. – Cassie

 

Kansas Federation of Democratic Women Annual Convention

 

The women of CD3 had their convention April 21 & 22 and we had a blast!  Saturday provided a changing of the guard – congratulations to Tanya Shyrock as she assumes the role of KFDW President.  Filling Candace Ayers’ shoes is going to be quite the job!
We learned about Campaign Financing, Diversity, Social Media and its impact, and how to become a Precinct Leader, and had an engaging discussion with our congressional panelists centering on reproductive freedom.  We visited with Gail Buckner, our National Federation President and capped off the evening with a conversation with the Co-Chair of the Pro-Choice caucus, Rep Diana DeGette.
Many thanks to our Silent Auction donors, thanks to the volunteers who stepped up to assist and many, many thanks to all our speakers and panelists – it was a wonderful and informative weekend – I look forward to what we can accomplish together this year to stem the tide of fascism.

To celebrate April’s Earth Day, Dawn Olney will put on another hat and talk to us about things we can do in our yards to help the environment, particularly birds and pollinators.  Dawn is the Program coordinator for JCDW North, is  a Democratic Precinct Committeewoman, and recently completed courses in the Johnson County K- State Extension Master Naturalist program.She has become interested in plants, birds, and pollinators.  In addition to working to elect representatives who understand environmental issues and policies, there is a lot we can do personally to improve the environment. Some of them are super simple. 

We meet in person at the Democratic office and on Zoom.

Update from Cassie Woolworth, JCDW South President

We had a good turnout for Eden Village and got to see photos and construction shots of the tiny houses.  The last was purchased a few years ago, so now they are raising money to finish the housing on the property at 10th and Minnesota in KC.  The spotlight on homelessness these last few years has been helpful but, as always, there is a vast need and only a few willing to help.

To help donate or if you know anyone who can donate construction materials, time, services (plumbing, electrical) send them over to help at Gathering Tree or directly at Donate to Eden Village

Kansas Federation of Democratic Women Annual Convention: April 21-22, 2023

The CD3 arm of the Kansas Federation of Democratic Women is hosting their annual convention at the Olathe Hilton Garden Inn the weekend of April 21 and 22nd.
Join in on the fun Friday night for Game Night and a Saturday full of Education, Mentoring, Training and Comradery.  Registration is available online!

Donkey Derby Fundraiser: May 6, 2023

JCDW North is hosting a Donkey Derby Fundraiser on Sat, May 6, 2023 full of marvelous hats and mint julips out on the veranda. Starting at 5pm,  bring your bragging rights and join in on the fun with three TVs to choose from.  Look for more info on the JCDWKS website. 

Flip it Blue: July 15, 2023

Please join us March 2 when we are joined by Meryl Carver-Allmond from the Kansas Coalition Against the Death Penalty. We gather at 6:00 and speaker starts at 6:30.  We meet in person at the Democratic Office and will have a Zoom option.

 

Meryl Carver-Allmond is a former capital public defender and proud Board Member of the Kansas Coalition Against the Death Penalty.

A 2005 University of Kansas School of Law graduate, Meryl began her career as a research attorney for the Hon. Gary Rulon, former Chief Judge of the Kansas Court of Appeals. After four years with the Kansas Appellate Defender Office, she transitioned to the Capital Appellate Defender Office in 2012, where she had the honor of representing clients as part of defense teams in both the Kansas Supreme Court and the United States Supreme Court. In 2021, Meryl became the first-ever statewide training director for the Kansas public defender system, where she continues to work to provide teaching and tools that help public defenders zealously advocate for their clients’ rights and dignity.

About Eden Village:Eden Village of Kansas City will be serving individuals that have experienced chronic homelessness for 12 months or more.  Eden Village community will eliminate the biggest concern in a homeless person’s life, a safe place to lay their head at night.  Eden Village will be helping to successfully guide individuals that are homeless to obtain fundamental needs of food, clothing, and shelter.  The goal is to help these individuals to become contributing members of society with the help of social service support systems and volunteers.

Eden Village is a program dedicated to providing housing for the chronically homeless and disabled.  Eden Village of Kansas City provides low-cost housing to those living in homelessness through tiny homes in a pocket community.  Each home will house a single resident and will be designed and built with the needs of the resident in mind.  The tiny homes are permanent housing for the residents, allowing simple modifications to be made as the resident ages.  Eden Village of Kansas will provide a long-term solution to homelessness by continuing to build tiny-home communities until no one sleeps outside.  This model can be easily adopted and implemented in cities across the nation.  Eden Village of Kansas City will include tiny homes, a resource center, community and memorial gardens, storm shelters and Eden Village store.  Eden Village of Kansas City tiny homes will be 398 square feet with a bedroom, bathroom, and combined kitchen/living room space. Eden Village of Kansas City will be a vital component of the recovery process for those living in chronic homelessness.

Speakers

Kerry Poolman is a graduate from the University of Kansas. Kerry started her professional career as a sales associate for Hallmark Cards and transitioned into the real estate profession, spending the last 24 years running her own rental property business.  She is a proud mom of two grown children, Paige and Charles. Happily married to Tim Poolman for the last 24 years, they enjoy spending time at their lake home, traveling and are heavily involved in their church, Grace Church of Overland Park.  She has helped with large event planning for both the children’s department and the youth group. She began her involvement with the Uplift homeless organization in 2015.  Her eyes were opened to the great need of the people who live on the streets.  She is excited about the opportunity that Eden Village of Kansas City will provide for 20-30 individuals who want a real opportunity to move out of their chronic situation.

Katrina Gerber is a graduate from Kansas State University with a degree in Architectural Engineering. Katrina worked at several companies before opening her own engineering firm in 2003, BGR Engineers, Inc. Katrina and her husband, Paul Gerber, have two grown children, Zach and Abby. For the last seven years, she has coached volleyball at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School.  Katrina was first introduced to Uplift through the Centurion Leadership program back in 2004. She firmly believes that we are called to do what we can to help those who are in need.  She feels so fortunate to be involved with an organization like Eden Village of Kansas City.

Komal Kaur is a freshman at the University of Kansas and founder of Eye of an Immigrant, a non-profit organization committed to sharing stories, and providing resources and funds immigrants attempting or gaining their citizenship.  Their focus is on Attorney Fees which are not currently covered by any other organization. 

Komal’s family immigrated from Punjab, India to the United States in the late 1980s and some of her family has gone through years of waiting, high costs, and deportation. This has led her here.  She recently returned from visiting her grandmother in Punjab, India giving her even more insight.  For more information or to help, visit  Eye of an Immigrant.
