June Speakers

North Meeting

When: June 6th, 6:30pm

Where: Lucky Brewgrille, 5401 Johnson Drive, Mission, KS 66205

Kay Heley is a health care professional, bringing over 30 years of public health nursing experience to the Board. While serving in the Peace Corp as a health educator in a small health clinic in Liberia, West Africa, she received a deep understanding about the importance of access to clean water. She saw first hand the health effects on children who became ill from drinking contaminated water due to not having a reliable and safe water source. Water is too precious to take for granted.

Kay currently serves as a nurse in the Shawnee Mission School District. Previously, she worked at Bethany Medical Center, Truman Medical Center, and the Wyandotte County Health Department. Kay is an active volunteer in her church, the PTA, the League of Women Voters, and the Shawnee Mission National Education Association (SM-NEA). She is involved in efforts to increase voter registration, improve environmental sustainability, and expand local access to health care, dental care, and mental health care for area residents. Kay holds a B.S. in Nursing, an M.A. in Global and International Studies from the University of Kansas, and a B.A. from Yale University in Political Science with an emphasis in Biology.

South Meeting

When: Thursday, June 20th at 6:30

Where: Old Shawnee Pizza, 19617 W 101st St, Lenexa, KS 66220

Our guest speaker in May is Chris Morrow, Executive Director of Kansas NORML.

Chris Morrow is a lifelong Democrat and a former city council member and popularly elected mayor in deep red Gardner, KS. In 2016 he ran for state senate, and in 2018 he served as Carl Brewer’s lieutenant governor running mate. While Chris has always been in favor of marijuana legalization, campaigning statewide with the Brewer ticket solidified his position through his interactions with Kansas and the facts he was presented with on the trail. He has been Executive Director of Kansas NORML since February of this year.
