We are sister organizations, working together to engage women in politics and help get Democrats in Johnson County elected.

May Speakers

North Meeting

In November, we elected two JCDW members to Johnson County Board of Commissioners, Becky Fast and Janee Hanzlick. They will be the guest speakers at our May meeting to inform us on what they’ve learned in the first months of their terms. Please join us!


Becky Fast has a long history of public service and commitment to the county prior to her election as District 1 – Johnson County Commissioner. She served two terms on the Roeland Park City Council and was elected unanimously to serve as council president.

She is a graduate of the Johnson County Citizens Academy and the Northeast Johnson County Chamber leadership training program.

Becky is a life-long educator starting out her career as an elementary education teacher and now teaching at the graduate level as an adjunct professor at Washburn University. In addition, she is an executive director of a state-wide nonprofit and advocates in the Kansas legislature for improvements in the mental health service delivery system.


  • Former CEO of Safehome, Johnson County’s domestic violence agency, where she spent 20 years working for a safer, stronger community

  • Proud parent of two Shawnee Mission South graduates (now successful adults!)

  • Active parishioner at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church

  • Married to David Hanzlick for 32 years

  • Member, Overland Park Rotary Club

  • Leadership Overland Park, Class of 2007

  • Past President, Johnson County Community Violence Action Council (COMVAC)

  • Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC

  • Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) in Kansas for the past 28 years

South Meeting

When: Thursday, May 16th at 6:30

Where: Old Shawnee Pizza, 19617 W 101st St, Lenexa, KS 66220

CD3 Women’s annual meeting will be held in conjunction with South’s monthly general membership meeting in May. Members, guests, and visitors of all three KFDW (Kansas Federation of Democratic Women) organizations are invited and encouraged to attend. We will begin announcements early to allow time for CD3 business, following our speaker.

Our guest speaker in May is Tim DeWeese, Director of Johnson County Mental Health.

Our guest speaker, Tim DeWeese is the Director of Johnson County Mental Health Center employing more than 330 staff who provide behavioral health services to more than 10,000 county residents annually. Tim possesses a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Missouri Southern State University and a Master of Social Work Administration degree from the University of Kansas. He is a Licensed Mental Health Professional in Kansas and has over 25 years of experience in community mental health, where he has worked in various capacities. He possesses extensive knowledge and experience in the public mental health delivery system, client-centered leadership, and program design/development.

Ross will give you a tour of these wines, and suggest the best ways to pair them for your next dinner party. Cheeses and appetizers included. Tickets are limited. Going to meetings is a great way to meet like minded friends, get new and important information, and meet the leaders in our community who are making a difference! And, it’s just really fun! Please join us!

Beginning this month, we will also be providing information for the Progressive Federation Democratic Women of Wyandotte County, who also meet monthly.

The May speaker will be Tonja McCoy. Topic:  Women in Leadership Positions in Kansas and How They Can Impact The Election Process.


Asian Festival was a great success and a lot of fun. Our table was very busy and the prize wheel was a huge hit! We gave away buttons, stickers, necklaces, and candy. Thank you, Barbara Zimmerman for the idea and loaning the wheel!

We signed up new Key Volunteers, Precinct Leaders as well as new members of the Kansas Federation of Democratic Women,

We were happy to have the Johnson County Democrats join in on the fun with JCDW at our table, engaging with the public.

It was a lot of fun! Come out and join us next year! A special thank you to all those that helped at the table.

KFDW 66th Annual Convention

The women of the Kansas 3rd Congressional District will be hosting the Kansas Federation of Democratic Women’s 66th Annual Convention! Save the weekend for June 21-23. The convention will be held at the Olathe Hilton Garden Inn. There are several convention packages to choose from, depending on your availability and interest.

  • We are excited this year to offer a comprehensive selection of workshops for those who are running for office or working in or volunteering for a campaign. Those who elect to attend the workshops will be able to attend four. They include the following:
